Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Title in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his maiden title for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.

The athlete, a former number one, has had a torrid period, winning just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his serve in particular - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-term mentor his previous coach.

Now training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's first title after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt after spring of the previous year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has secured 21 victories at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my children at once, so to win a title is particularly special," said world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching play style and recurring reactions on the playing surface had prompted some to wonder if his capacity to play at the elite level was over.

Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play positively, backed up by an improved serve.

He came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before the challenger, striving for his first ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to push for a decider.

He rescued 4 initial break points in a close deciding set before the Russian broke to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, he earned victory with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
