The Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

At first glance, Lux might appear more like a difficult university quiz rather than the latest pop album by an artist whose previous single featured an international K-pop star. Split across four different parts and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, frequently by way of the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of other pop stars seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to transcend overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, with full credit belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, its scale feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge thuds down like cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues to the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album is that you rarely quite know—or even wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Almost every song ends at a completely distinct place than where it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame with a delicate symphony before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls her earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement of the album is straddling the line between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets echoed by another expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of hidden gems that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
